How often should I test my GFCIs?

We have discussed in another post what a GFCI is and what it does. So the questions that come up from time to time are “Do GFCI’s need to be tested, and if so, how often?” The short answer is that manufacturers usually recommend that the end user test the device monthly by simply pressing the “test” button followed by pressing the “reset” button to restore the power once again. If the device does not “trip”, then it has failed the test and should be replaced to maintain the protection that is required by the National Electrical Code. Always refer to the manufacturer’s instructions.

When the test button is pressed, the path of the current flow is routed in an alternate path instead of through the sensing unit (C.T. - Known as a current transformer) inside the GFCI. The Sensing unit detects the unbalanced current flow and disconnects the power source keeping it from flowing to the rest of the circuit. Check out this other post that we made were we dive deeper into GFCI requirements and functions. https://www.creightonelec.com/electrical-topics/what-is-a-gfci-and-why-do-i-need-them-in-some-places
